Gustave Dore was one of the most popular illustrators of the 19th century. Dore's 231 illustrations for Don Quixote occupy a special position in his oeuvre. The story of the gentle, mad knight, who, fired by medieval epic romances, sets out upon a series of exploits totally at variance with society's standards, seemed to evoke a unique response from Dore. All the full page engravings after Dore's drawings have been assembled in this volume.
